International Traineeships in AIDS Prevention Studies

The International Traineeships in AIDS Prevention Studies (I-TAPS) program, funded by the National Institute of Mental Health, Fogarty International Center, and private donors, has been training scientists from low- and middle-income countries in HIV prevention research since 1988. Each year, 10 to 12 applicants are selected to train with UCSF scientists at the Center for AIDS Prevention Studies (CAPS) and Global Health Sciences (GHS). During the six-week intensive short course, each visiting scientist develops a protocol for a specific HIV prevention-related research project to be carried out in his or her home country. Upon completion of data collection, the trainee may return to UCSF for a course in scientific writing, during which data analysis is completed and a manuscript is written for submission to the peer-reviewed literature.
